FortisBC Donates to Help Create a Sacred Space at Penticton Regional Hospital

Posted on: September 5, 2025

A generous donation from FortisBC is helping the South Okanagan Similkameen (SOS) Medical Foundation move closer to its vision of creating a Sacred Space at Penticton Regional Hospital.

The Sacred Space is envisioned as a quiet, inclusive sanctuary where patients, families, and staff can turn during life’s most difficult moments, a place to grieve, reflect, or find comfort. The Space will be designed to reflect the diverse spiritual, cultural, and emotional needs of the South Okanagan Similkameen community. Generous gifts like FortisBC’s donation, along with an earlier $100,000 gift from local philanthropist Kevin Huey, are helping build momentum for this campaign and bringing the vision closer to reality.

“We are incredibly grateful to FortisBC for their generosity and leadership,” said Ian Lindsay, CEO of the SOS Medical Foundation. “FortisBC has a long history of supporting local initiatives, and their gift to the Sacred Space campaign demonstrates their commitment to the well-being of patients, families, and staff at Penticton Regional Hospital. Their generosity sets a powerful example, and we hope it inspires others to come forward so that together we can make this vision a reality.”

“At FortisBC, we recognize the deep cultural and spiritual significance of Indigenous traditions in the South Okanagan Similkameen region,” said Janet Devaney, senior manager, community and Indigenous initiatives at FortisBC. “Supporting the Sacred Space campaign is a meaningful way for us to honour Indigenous perspectives while contributing to a space that reflects the diverse cultural identities of the community. We’re especially proud to support the inclusion of a dedicated smudging room, which helps ensure the space is welcoming, respectful and inclusive for everyone.”

“To make this Sacred Space a reality, we are asking for additional community support,” says Ian Lindsay. “Every gift, big or small, moves us closer to creating a place of comfort and healing at Penticton Regional Hospital. The SOS Medical Foundation is welcoming support from individuals, families, service clubs, and local businesses. Together, every donation truly makes a difference.”
